MAÂLEM NAJIB SOUDANI

LIVING HERITAGE OF THE ZAOUIA

Born to a long line of Essaouira Gnaoua, Maâlem Najib Soudani embodies memory transmitted from generation to generation, rooted in the rituals and history of the descendants of Sudanese slaves. As the son of Hajjoub “Goubani” Soudani—the former Moqadem of the Gnaoua Zaouia of Essaouira and respected grand master—Najib grew up in the heart of the brotherhood. As a child, he learned the rites and music of the Tagnaouite from his father, in an apprenticeship that combined strict spiritual and musical discipline. When his father passed in 1997, Najib continued his path alongside major Gnaoua players such Boubker Guinea, Ahmed Al  Haddad, Belkheir… all masters who came along to enrich his already significant practice. His perfect understanding of répertoires and codes have made him a foundational reference of his art form in Morocco. Maâlem Soudani has performed many times at the Gnaoua and World Music Festival in Essaouira, where he is a discreet but essential pillar, bearer of a living knowledge, respected for his fidelity to tradition and easily recognized on the national as well as international stage.
