One of the most renowned Maâlems of Marrakech, Maâlem Gadiri Hassan, who’s real name is Hassan Zgarhi, is a leading figure of the Gnaoua scene in the Red City. Born in 1952 in Marrakech, he has been practicing this art for over 55 years. He was initiated at a young age by the great Maâlem Mbark waled Sidi Amarra, from whom he learned the foundations of Tagnaouite. Throughout his career, he has shared the stage with many prominent figures, including Maâlem Simohamed Sam, Maâlem Lmansoum, Maâlem El Aachi Baqbou, Maâlem Abdounabi Lhrab, Maâlem Ahmed Baqbou, Maâlem Hassan Hakmoun, Maâlem H’mida Boussou and Maâlem Abdel Latif wald Sidi Amara. Since the 1970s, he has toured internationally, performing on stages across the world. His music is deeply rooted in the Tagnaouite tradition, while also drawing on African folk influences, continuing a legacy inherited from his ancestors, notably Bilal, a foundational figure with a legendary voice.
