BIOGRAPHY

MAÂLEM ABDELKBIR MERCHANE

Born in 1951 in Marrakech, Maâlem Abdelkébir Merchane is an emblematic figure of traditional Gnaoua music. Initiated at the age of nine, he devoted himself entirely to this art under the guidance of Maâlems El Ayachi, Baqbou and Mohamed Sam, who transmitted to him the spiritual and musical foundations of Tagnaouite. His distinctive style is rooted in the mastery of two major Gnaoua traditions: the Marsaoui style of Essaouira, both hypnotic and melodic, and the Marrakchi style, more percussive and intense. This duality allows him to move fluidly between different musical sensibilities, resulting in a deeply expressive performance. Over the years, Maâlem Abdelkébir Merchane has established himself as a leading reference in Gnaoua music, recognized both for his virtuosity on the guembri and his stage presence. He leads the group Oulad Sidi H’mou, ensuring the transmission of an age-old knowledge and the continuation of Gnaoua rituals. Through his performances and international collaborations, he contributes to the global reach of Gnaoua music beyond Morocco’s borders, while remaining faithful to his core commitment: to transmit and bring to life this ancestral heritage across generations.
