ATTHEROOTS OF A SHARED EXPRESSION: GOSPEL AND THE GNAOUA TRADITION

Fusion : Mehdi Qamoum with The Harlem Spirit of Gospel by Anthony Morgan

The collaboration between The Harlem Spirit of Gospel by Anthony Morgan and Mehdi Qamoum explores the deep affinities between gospel and the Gnaoua tradition. Though emerging from distinct historical contexts, both forms are anchored in a shared African heritage and shaped by a strong spiritual dimension.

Songs, rhythms, and vocal expression reflect a common pursuit of transmission and collective experience, where music becomes a vehicle for faith and connection. Through the historical movements that have linked the African continent to the Americas, these traditions have evolved while preserving the memory of their origins.

In this creation, Gnaoua musicians reinterpret elements of the gospel repertoire, opening a new space for dialogue.

The voices of the choir and the pulse of the guembri interact to create a meeting point between two spiritual traditions, Christian and Muslim, united by a shared energy and a common purpose: to gather, to express, and to transmit through music.
