The Talking Tree, a living place of transmission and exchange, is back again this year as one of the unique events of the Gnaoua and World Music Festival. Inspired by the African tradition of talking circles, the Arbre à Palabres recreates the spirit of collective vigils, where people debate, tell stories and think the world out loud, in the shade of a symbolic tree.

Set up on the terrace of the Institut français d’Essaouira, in the heart of the medina, this event gives a voice to artists, thinkers, journalists and festival-goers in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

There’s no stage here, no barriers, just voices that cross, ideas that are shared, and active listening around the themes of creation, memory, commitment and musical trajectories. Over the course of two afternoons, Gnaoua musicians, guest artists and the festival’s international figures exchange freely with the public.

As every year, the meetings are hosted by Emmanuelle Honorin, a journalist specializing in world music and a loyal Festival partner. Between oral transmissions, life stories and spontaneous debates, the Arbre à Palabres offers a precious breath in the tumult of the concerts. A moment suspended, to think differently, collectively.
