MAÂLEM MOULAY EL TAYEB DEHBI

THE BREATH OF MARRAKECH

Maâlem Moulay El Tayeb Dehbi was born in 1979 in Marrakech to a Gnaoua family for whom the experience of music was like living breath. He trained with his father from childhood with his father— Maâlem Moulay Abdellatif—and grew up among emblematic figures of the Tagnouite such as Mohamed Kouyou, Abdelkabir Ben Salloum, Mahjoub Al-Khlamousi, Zoukari Hassan, and Haj Boujamaa. This disciplined musical education shaped a precise musicianship, deeply rooted and inhabited by the spirit of ritual.

Recognised for his perfect mastery of the rhythms of the Gnaoua repertoire, he has imposed himself as one of the most familiar faces on the Marrakchi scene. He has shared the stage with many established artists and left an indelible impression on audiences at 2018 Gnaoua and World Music Festival in Essaouira, where he performed on the Moulay Hassan main stage with two other young maâlems from Marrakech. Bringing together tradition and a commitment to transmission, Maâlem Moulay El Tayeb is following the same path as his masters, in service to Gnaoua that is sincere, authentic, and evolving.
