MAÂLEM BAGHNI

SCHOOLED IN THE MEDINA

Abdelghani Shaaroun, better known as Maâlem Baghni, was born in 1965 in the heart of the medina of Marrakech. Born into a family deeply attached to Gnaoua tradition, he grew among the rhythms of the guembri and ritual ceremonies. From a very early age, he trained with Maâlem Al-Âyachi Baqbou, who had formed a strong musical friendship with his family. These early years forged an intimate link between practice and transmission. Throughout his career, he has worked with many of the great figures of Gnaoua, including Maâlem Abdel Latif Al-Mekhzoumi and Maâlem Ba Hajoub.

He has developed a style of playing that is both sober and refined, nourished by listening and experience. His knowledge of the repertoire, his rhythmic rigour and the quality of his singing voice have earned him the respect of his peers and audiences alike. He has performed on many stages, including several times at the Gnaoua and World Music Festival in Essaouira, where he embodies the Marrakchi tradition in all its depth.
