Born in Meknes in 1960, Maâlem Abdenbi El Fakir—better known by his stage name of El Meknassi—wears the name of his native city with great pride. As the son of the great Maâlem Laarbi, his entire world was Gnaoua, and he began his initiation under his father’s direct influence. He quickly developed an affinity for the guembri, which he mastered with remarkable precision. Known for his capacity to combine fidelity to a traditional repertoire with more modern expressions, El Meknassi has proven himself to be one of the most respected artists of his generation. His subtle yet powerful play, deep voice, and strong sense of rhythm have earned him a loyal following in Morocco and abroad. With his group, he has toured many of the Kingdom’s cities and international destinations, always attracting wider audiences. Through his performance, he represents Gnaoua in constant evolution yet never betraying the essence of ritual.
