MAÂLEM ABDELLAH AKHARRAZ

Steeped in Gnaoua culture from an early age, Maâlem Abdellah Akharraz perpetuates an ancestral musical and spiritual heritage. The son of a Grand Maâlem and member of the prestigious Confrérie des Gnaouas de Sidi Bilal, he was trained first by Maâlem Boubker Guinea, before perfecting his art alongside Maâlem Paca. He then continued his apprenticeship with Tyour Gnaoua, the band with whom he performed for 15 years, across five continents. In 2010, he founded his own troupe, establishing himself as a regular at the Gnaoua and World Music Festival, where he gives performances in the purest Tagnaouite tradition. Maâlem Akharraz is also a recognised spiritual guide, leading the lilas—sacred ceremonies designed to purify the soul and restore inner balance—with wisdom.

Each note played, each incantation becomes a vibrant prayer, immersing participants and spectators in a unique musical and mystical experience. Faithful to the teachings of his ancestors yet modern, he continues to infuse gnaoua music with a universal and timeless dimension.
